TRAINING

Mooloolaba SLSC prides itself on an encouraging and inclusive surf sports program that provides training to improve skills for both lifesaving and competition for members of all ages.

We have a range of training sessions that cater for all levels from Beginner to Elite, Juniors, Cadets, Seniors & Masters. Training is not reserved for the especially skilled and experienced – it is for everyone! Training is the best time to meet fellow competitors and try something new, and it provides an ideal environment for mastering your surf skills, especially on craft you may not yet be familiar or confident with, like boards or skis.

Please check out our training calendar for all the latest session times and any updates to location etc. To attend the advanced sessions you should have completed your Bronze and/or SRC and have a basic level of competence on boards and racing mals and surf skis.

We currently don’t run any Swim Coaching / Squad training but check with your local pool as you should also be doing some swim training, either by yourself, or preferably with a squad. Cotton Tree, Mountain Creek & Kawana Aquatic Centres have Junior, Senior and Masters Swim Squads available.

  1. Ski and Board sessions will be targeted at specific age groups periodically to accommodate for skill level & numbers.
  2. Times & Venues may change depending on conditions so please check with your coach.
  3. Start times are critical. Please be ready to train at the times noted.
  4. Parents if you are not sure of your child’s ability please start them at a lower level to avoid injury.
  5. Cadets, Seniors & Masters, please use the self-assessment criteria set out in each sectors to consider which training sessions are right for your ability.

BEACH

F.I.T.

Coach Craig Parker

The sessions are based on running and exercising, fast, for short intervals with a good recovery. It caters to all levels of fitness. You can go at your own pace. MLSC Members aged U11 and older are welcome.

This is not specific to Beach Sprinting or Surf Sports. Interval Training is considered to be more effective than normal cardio because the intensity is higher and you are able to increase both your aerobic and anaerobic endurance while burning more fat.

The sessions are one hour max, (closer to 45 mins) including the warm up and stretching. It is quite varied and may include hill climbs, stairs, plyometrics, sleds, and stop watch/timer work to measure improvement.

Training, at this stage, is for U11s and older, Opens and Masters. A session for U8s to U10s may be added later in the season. “Whatever you want to achieve on the sand, GO FOR IT.”

INS &

OUTS

Coach Craig Parker

30 minutes of Life Saving activity, in and out of the surf with a run up the beach. Ideal for keeping up your general level of fitness for Patrols and the Proficiency Run Swim Run.

The session is designed for all fitness levels. You will be able to go at your own pace and still enjoy training with the group. The aim is to build fitness levels for the patrol season and the Skills Maintenance assessments.

For those familiar with the Tuesday Ins and Outs sessions, the intention is to include longer swims, (one to three minute efforts) with less focus on the beach runs. Each effort will involve negotiating the break, which is what we do in a rescue.

Sessions will be about 30 minutes. We would love to see people who can’t make it on Tuesday mornings. All fitness and skill levels are welcome. This is more of a Patrol general fitness group rather than a Surf Sports training group. See you there. Remember your rashie. (Loaner rashies available.) No watches on your arms please. Club/Patrol caps not required.

GROUP U14 – Open Boards
LEVEL Intermediate – Advanced

COACH Brett Williams
Thursday 6.00am
GROUP Masters
LEVEL Intermediate – Advanced

This session is aimed at paddlers who would be competent and can handle a board in most conditions and have to have a reasonable level of ability, fitness and technique.

The sessions are varied formats they might be from river esplanade around Minyama island twice and down the river and back to the club. Alternatively we paddle from the club to Kawana Surf Club and back. Sessions may consist of 7 minutes steady paddling, then 1 minutes rest and we may do this 7 times.

Some sessions will involve racing from the beach to cans off shore and back again, followed by a short run up the beach or alternatively around poles on the beach.

This format will suit a broader range of abilities and members and it is a more high paced, short course racing designed to build stamina.

There would be individual races and team events, during these sessions.

The session is usually 6 to 8 starts from the shoreline going out through hopefully a couple of wave sections.

TUESDAY 6.00am – 7.00am
GROUP Open – Masters
LEVEL Intermediate – Advanced

At the start of the season during the colder months the session mainly concentrates on Ski and Board then introduce the Swim leg as the water warms up.

The sessions vary dependant on whether we are doing long course (earlier in the season) or shorter course (closer to carnivals).

Majority of the time the sessions are based in front of the lifeguard tower. This allows the coach to set slightly different courses for the faster/slower athletes, and accommodate for those who only wish to do single disciplines.

This is not a learn to paddle session so all participants should have a reasonable level of competence on Ski/Board.
