Once you have successfully gained your Bronze Medallion, you’ll have the opportunity to take up other courses such as IRB Crew & IRB Driver awards, Patrol Captains Certificate, ATV &/or Tractor Drivers Induction, Radio Officers Certificate, and Emergency Care awards.

We strongly encourage you to consider at least one of these courses to further enhance your lifesaving skills and support your patrol team. Some of courses may require you to meet certain prerequisites.

Becoming a lifesaver requires a unique perspective on the aquatic environment, and it challenges you to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to keep our beaches safe. By training, you’ll meet like-minded people and join our dynamic club that values teamwork and camaraderie.

 

COURSE SUMMARY

The Bronze Medallion course provides participants with the skills and knowledge in order to be able to participate in Surf Life Saving patrol operations. This is a core award to be a surf lifesaver in Australia.

Upon completion of the course, members are assigned to a patrol and become eligible to participate in Surf Lifesaving carnivals. In order to maintain their eligibility to patrol and compete in Surf Lifesaving carnivals, they must attend an annual skills maintenance session.

Courses run for 6 weeks, one weekday evening for theory and dry practical components and one weekend morning for wet practical (run-swim-run, board paddling, rescues, etc)

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must meet ALL of the following requirements:
  • Be a financial member of Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club;
  • Must hold a current Blue Card (if over 18 years old)
  • Be at least 15 years of age on the final assessment date;
  • Apply for and/or provide us with your USI number

  • Complete the mandatory Member Protection courses (If over 18 years of age) Child Safe Awareness (CSA) and Child Youth Risk Management Strategies (CYRMS)

  • Complete an unaided swim of 400 m in 9 minutes or less (goggles and masks permitted) in a swimming pool of not less than 25 m, which will be observed prior to you undertaking any water training or assessment activities.

Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC)

There’s a role for everyone, and the skills you learn along the way will not only save lives and help the community but potentially put you on a pathway to places you never thought possible.

COURSE SUMMARY

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge of basic patrolling and surf awareness in order to be able to participate in lifesaving operations. This course is the minimum water safety qualification for Junior Activity supervision.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must meet ALL of the following requirements:
  • Be a financial member of Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club;
  • Be at least 13 years of age on the final assessment date
  • Must hold a current Blue Card (if over 18 years old)
  • Apply for and/or provide us with your USI number
  • Be able to successfully swim 200m in less than 5 minutes and provide a self-timed figure

A member’s proficiency remains valid until 31st December each year. Failure to maintain proficiency or complete necessary awards by this date will result in the member being prohibited from performing patrols, operating rescue craft, and participating in surf life saving competitions.

Please note that if you gain your award after 1 July then you are not required to attend a proficiency until the following year.

IRB SKILLS MAINTENANCE DATES FOR 2024/2025 SEASON.

The sessions commence with sign-on at the club. Please be there and ready for a 7:30am start.

The IRB Assessor will carry out a briefing on the session. Some of the briefing will be on skills and procedures. Safety around IRBs and the IRB room will also be covered, as well as care and protection of gear and equipment. You will then be split into groups for set-up of the IRBs.

The session will be in-depth and seeks to improve skills and knowledge for all. Some will be asked to do additional work and may be asked to attend another session. Any additional time will be because the team wishes to assist in improving all of our skill levels rather than passing judgment on individual ability.

All attendees are required to attend and participate in pack up and clean down including the IRB room post training.

First Aid - HLTAID011

COURSE SUMMARY
Provide First Aid aims to develop the knowledge and skills for a person to manage emergency first aid situations and deliver competent emergency care until the arrival of professional medical support. The course includes CPR.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Respond in an emergency situation
  • Apply appropriate first aid procedures
  • Communicate details of the incident

  • Evaluate own performance

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum age 14

  • Financial member (who holds appropriate Blue Card if over 18 years of age)

  • Be an active patrolling member OR be enrolled in course to patrol (Observers/SRC/Bronze)^

SKILLS MAINTENANCE/ PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS

  • This award is current for three (3) years and must be renewed through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) including the SLSQ Education – Courses & Training.

  • For this award (Resuscitation [AID]) to remain current, candidates must perform an annual skills maintenance activity at a Queensland Club between 1 July and 31 December of each year. See Skills Maintenance/Proficiency Requirements in the “Course Information: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation” section for more details.

ART (ADVANCED RESUSCITATION TECHNIQUES) - HLTAID015

COURSE SUMMARY
Advanced Resuscitation aims to provide participants with the necessary skills, knowledge and applications to use advanced resuscitation techniques. It is specifically designed for individuals wishing to safely administer oxygen by facemask or mechanical resuscitator to a breathing or non- breathing casualty.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Respond to an emergency situation
  • Perform advanced resuscitation
  • Communicate details of the incident
  • Evaluate the incident

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum Age 15
  • Financial member (who holds appropriate Blue Card if over 18 years of age)
  • Hold First Aid (HLTAID011) and be actively patrolling 

ASSESSMENT

  • Assessment is through demonstration, presentation and application of all elements of competency in the workplace.
  • Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role-plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios.

SKILLS MAINTENANCE/ PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS

  • For this award (Advanced Resuscitation Techniques [AID]) to remain current, candidates must perform an annual skills maintenance activity at a Queensland Club between 1 July and 31 December of each year.
  • For this award (Resuscitation [AID]) to remain current, candidates must perform an annual skills maintenance activity at a Queensland Club between 1 July and 31 December of each year.

COURSE SUMMARY
The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to effectively drive and manage an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) in surf rescue operations.

PRE–REQUISITES
IRB CREW

  • Minimum 15 years of age
  • Proficient Bronze Medallion
  • Financial Member of MSLSC

  • Minimum 17 years of age
  • Marine License
  • Proficient Bronze Medallion & IRB Crew
